  1. How early should I plan on ordering nursery furniture?  It’s great that you’re thinking ahead. Experts say to go ahead and decide on a style or theme as soon as you want, and then start getting your furniture together in the second trimester. Second trimester is the time sex show which is a big help in choosing your furniture.  Some things to ask yourself when working out your timing: How long will my furniture take to ship? Will I be able to help move the furniture around when it arrives, or will I be too big?
  2. Tips on building your nursery:
  • Wallpapering and painting should be done at least eight weeks before the baby is expected.  To give time for the fumes to evaporate to eliminate any potential harm to the baby.  Make sure to leave the windows open for proper airing until the actual arrival
  • Make sure there are no gaps between the mattress and crib, and look out for any small parts or plastic coverings.  Check that none of the crib slats are more than two and 3/8 inches apart, and that all the bolts and screws are tight.
  • Do not put the crib under direct light.  Keep the crib away from direct sunlight in the morning or under streetlight at night.
  • As much as possible, veer away from using wall to wall carpeting.  Use wood or area rugs, they don’t harbor as much allergy-inducing dust. Make sure to secure the rugs with double sided tape to avoid accidents especially with the baby in the mommy’s arms.
  • Make sure to put diaper supplies close to the changing table for easy access.
  • Anchor all heavy furniture to the wall so it won't fall over if accidentally bumped.
  1. What to buy? Everyone wants their nursery to be perfect, but getting ready for a new arrival can cost a lot of money. Remember, babies need lots of stuff, but not everything has to be purchased right away.  Here are the basics to get started:
  • Crib set – including a bumper pad, three to four fitted sheets and two comforters
  • Bassinet sheet – if using a bassinet
  • Waterproof crib liners
  • Light blanket or sheet for cover
  • Bolster pillow for propping baby to sleep on a particular side
  • Music box or Mobile
  • Nightlight
